Story Overview

Royal Tenenbaum (Gene Hackman) and his wife Etheline (Anjelica Huston) have three extraordinarily gifted children: Chas (Ben Stiller), Margot (Gwyneth Paltrow), and Richie (Luke Wilson). Each of them once showed remarkable promise at a very young age. Chas built a successful career in real estate and displayed an innate talent for international finance. Margot became an acclaimed playwright, earning a prestigious grant while still in ninth grade. Richie, a tennis prodigy, won the United States championship three consecutive years.

Despite these early triumphs, the Tenenbaum family’s seemingly brilliant life gradually unravels. Years of emotional distance, personal failures, and unspoken betrayals transform their celebrated past into a source of lingering disappointment. After two decades marked by separation and regret, the former child prodigies are left confronting the contrast between who they once were and who they have become.

Blending sharp wit with deep melancholy, The Royal Tenenbaums explores themes of family, lost potential, and reconciliation, presenting a stylized portrait of fractured relationships and the enduring desire for redemption.
