Plot Summary
Iris is a 2001 biographical drama that explores the life of celebrated novelist Iris Murdoch through the lens of her long and deeply complex marriage to literary critic John Bayley. Directed by Richard Eyre, the film is based on Bayley’s memoirs published in 1999 and presents an intimate, emotionally restrained portrait of love, intellect, and loss.
The narrative moves fluidly between two distinct periods in the couple’s life. In their younger years, portrayed by Kate Winslet and Hugh Bonneville, Iris is depicted as intellectually fearless, socially confident, and emotionally dominant, while Bayley appears shy, reserved, and quietly devoted. Their relationship is marked by an unconventional balance of power, shaped by Iris’s formidable presence and Bayley’s patient admiration.
In later life, the roles are painfully reversed. Judi Dench and Jim Broadbent portray the couple as they confront Iris’s devastating struggle with Alzheimer’s disease. As her brilliant mind begins to fade, Bayley becomes her primary caregiver, tending to her with unwavering loyalty in their home in North Oxford. The film contrasts Iris’s earlier independence with her growing vulnerability, capturing the quiet tragedy of watching a great intellect disappear.
The seaside sequences were filmed in Southwold, Suffolk, a location that held deep personal significance for Iris Murdoch and served as one of her favorite retreats. These scenes provide moments of visual calm and emotional reflection, reinforcing the film’s meditative tone.
Rather than functioning as a conventional literary biopic, Iris focuses on the emotional architecture of a marriage tested by time and illness. It is a restrained, humane examination of devotion, memory, and the enduring complexities of love.
