Monster (2003)
Official Trailer
Plot Summary
Repeatedly humiliated by strangers and deprived of any understanding of love, Aileen Wuornos (Charlize Theron) struggles to survive in a brutal world as a highway prostitute. Hardened by years of abuse, neglect, and violence, Aileen exists on the fringes of society, where survival often comes at a devastating emotional cost.
Just as her hope is nearly extinguished, Aileen meets Selby Wall (Christina Ricci), a naive and emotionally vulnerable young woman who offers her a glimpse of affection, acceptance, and the possibility of a normal life. Their relationship quickly becomes the emotional anchor Aileen has long been denied, giving her a reason to believe that escape from her past might still be possible.
However, the darkness of the highway does not release its grip so easily. Unknown to Selby—and ignored by the world around her—Aileen continues to face escalating violence during her nightly encounters. Each confrontation pushes her further toward a breaking point, blurring the line between self-defense, rage, and moral collapse.
Based on a true story, Monster delivers a haunting and unflinching portrait of isolation, trauma, and desperation. Through a transformative performance, the film explores how sustained abuse and societal indifference can shape a tragic descent into violence, challenging the audience to confront uncomfortable truths about empathy, justice, and responsibility.
