Story Overview

Kramer vs. Kramer centers on Ted Kramer (Dustin Hoffman), a highly dedicated advertising executive whose life revolves almost entirely around his career. One evening, when he returns home late from work, his wife Joanna (Meryl Streep) delivers a life-altering decision: she is leaving him in order to rediscover her own identity.

Joanna not only walks out on the marriage but also leaves their six-year-old son in Ted’s care. Suddenly thrust into the unfamiliar role of a single parent, Ted is forced to confront responsibilities he has long neglected.

While struggling to maintain his demanding job, Ted begins learning the daily realities of fatherhood—cooking meals, taking his son to the park, and slowly discovering his child’s fears, needs, and emotional world. What begins as an obligation gradually transforms into a deeply personal journey.

Through patience, mistakes, and growing emotional awareness, Ted forms a powerful bond with his son, redefining his understanding of love, responsibility, and sacrifice. The film offers a poignant exploration of parenthood, gender roles, and the emotional cost of personal ambition.
