Plot Summary

Set in the oppressive atmosphere of Stalin-era Soviet Union, Child 44 follows Leo Demidov (Tom Hardy), a decorated war hero and loyal state security officer whose unwavering faith in the system begins to crumble when he is assigned to investigate a series of child murders that officially “do not exist.”

Stripped of his rank and status after falling out of favor with the regime, Leo is sent on what appears to be a humiliating and impossible task. Accompanied by his wife Raisa (Noomi Rapace), he gradually uncovers a disturbing pattern that challenges the state’s rigid ideology—an ideology that denies the very concept of crime in a so-called perfect society.

As the investigation deepens, Leo discovers that the murders may be connected to a powerful party official, pushing him into direct conflict with the brutal machinery of the government. Surrounded by fear, surveillance, and systemic denial, the pursuit of truth becomes a matter of survival.

Dark, tense, and politically charged, Child 44 explores the cost of loyalty, the dangers of absolute power, and the moral courage required to confront a system built on lies.
