Michael Bloomberg, born as Michael Rubens Bloomberg on February 14, 1942, in Boston, Massachusetts, United States, is a Jewish-American politician, billionaire businessman, and philanthropist. He is best known as the founder and owner of the global media and financial data company Bloomberg L.P., as well as for serving as Mayor of New York City for three consecutive terms.



Michael Bloomberg was born at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in the Brighton neighborhood of Boston. He is the son of William Henry Bloomberg (1906–1963), a Jewish accountant for a dairy company, and Charlotte Bloomberg (1909–2011), who was also Jewish. He grew up in Medford, Massachusetts, where he completed his secondary education at Medford High School in 1960.

In 1964, Michael Bloomberg earned a Bachelor of Arts/Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Johns Hopkins University. He later completed his Master of Business Administration (MBA) at Harvard University in 1966.

Michael Bloomberg began his Wall Street career in 1966 with an entry-level position at Salomon Brothers. He worked there for 15 years before being dismissed, an event that would later become a turning point in his professional life.

In 1981, Michael Bloomberg co-founded Bloomberg L.P., a private financial, software, data, and media company headquartered in Midtown Manhattan, New York. The company grew rapidly into a global enterprise, employing approximately 20,000 people across 120 countries.

Michael Bloomberg entered politics in 2001 when he was elected the 108th Mayor of New York City. He won reelection in 2005 and 2009, serving three consecutive terms. His mayoralty lasted from January 1, 2002, to December 31, 2013, making him one of the city’s longest-serving mayors.

In 2020, Michael Bloomberg ran as a candidate for President of the United States as a member of the Democratic Party.

According to Forbes, as of 2025, Michael Bloomberg’s personal fortune was estimated at USD 104.7 billion, ranking him among the wealthiest individuals in the world.

Michael Bloomberg married Susan Brown in 1975. The couple divorced in 1993 and had two daughters: Georgina Bloomberg and Emma Bloomberg. Following his divorce, he maintained a long-term relationship with Diana Taylor.

A major philanthropist, Michael Bloomberg donated USD 3 billion in 2023 alone and has contributed more than USD 17.4 billion throughout his lifetime to causes including gun safety, climate change, education, and public health. He has pledged that upon his death—or earlier—his stake in Bloomberg L.P. will be donated to Bloomberg Philanthropies.

In 2024, Michael Bloomberg was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Joe Biden, the highest civilian honor in the United States, recognizing individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the nation and the world.
