Jerome Powell, whose full name is Jerome Hayden Powell, was born on February 4, 1953, in Washington, D.C., as the son of Patricia Powell and Jerome Powell Sr.. After completing preparatory studies at a Jesuit university in 1971, he graduated from Princeton University in 1975. He later earned a master’s degree in law from Georgetown University in 1979.



Between 1975 and 1976, Jerome Powell worked as a legislative assistant during the election campaign of Pennsylvania Senator Richard Schweiker, when Ronald Reagan was elected President of the United States. In 1979, he served as managing editor of the Georgetown Law Journal. That same year, he moved to New York and began his legal career.

From 1981 to 1983, Jerome Powell worked as an attorney at the law firm Davis Polk & Wardwell. He then served at Werbel & McMillen between 1983 and 1984. In 1985, he married Elissa Leonard. The couple has three children: Lucy Powell, Susie Powell, and Sam Powell.

Between 1984 and 1990, Jerome Powell worked at the investment bank Dillon, Read & Co., focusing on finance, merchant banking, and mergers and acquisitions, eventually rising to the position of vice president.

From 1990 to 1993, during the administration of President George H. W. Bush, Jerome Powell held senior positions at the United States Department of the Treasury, where he worked in a department responsible for investigating irregularities related to U.S. Treasury bonds.

In 1993, Jerome Powell became a managing director at Bankers Trust. After several clients incurred losses, he left the firm in 1995 and returned to work with Dillon, Read & Co.

Between 1997 and 2005, Jerome Powell worked at the Carlyle Group. After leaving Carlyle, he founded Severn Capital Partners, a private investment firm focused on private-sector financing and investment strategies.

In 2008, Jerome Powell became a managing partner at the Global Environment Fund, a private equity and venture capital firm focused on sustainable energy investments. From 2010 to 2012, he served as a visiting fellow at the Bipartisan Policy Center, a think tank based in Washington, D.C.

In December 2011, Jerome Powell, together with Jeremy C. Stein, was nominated by President Barack Obama to the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. He was formally appointed to the Federal Reserve Board in 2012 and became one of the leading supporters of the monetary policies implemented by then Fed Chair Janet Yellen.

Jerome Powell has served as a Governor of the Federal Reserve since 2012, where he has overseen banking regulation on Wall Street. In addition to his public service, he has served on the boards of various charitable and educational institutions, including the Bendheim Center for Finance at Princeton University.

As Janet Yellen’s term as Chair of the Federal Reserve was set to expire on February 3, 2018, U.S. President Donald Trump nominated Jerome Powell for the position on November 2, 2017. On December 5, 2017, the United States Senate confirmed his appointment by a vote of 22–1. Jerome Powell assumed office as Chair of the Federal Reserve on February 3, 2018.
