He completed his middle school and university education in Chennai.

Sundar Pichai graduated in 1993 from the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, where he studied metallurgical engineering. Upon graduation, he earned a scholarship to pursue a master’s degree in materials science and semiconductor physics at Stanford University in the United States. After completing his graduate studies at Stanford, he went on to earn an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

Before joining Google, Sundar Pichai worked in product management at Applied Materials in 2002 and later as a management consultant at McKinsey & Company. He joined Google on April 1, 2004, as a product manager. During his tenure, he played a key role in the development of major products such as Google Chrome, Chrome OS, and Google Drive, and also oversaw products including Gmail and Google Maps.

On March 13, 2013, following Andy Rubin’s departure from his long-held leadership role at Android, Larry Page appointed Sundar Pichai—who was then leading Chrome and Chrome OS—to take over Android. In 2014, his name was mentioned as a potential candidate for the CEO position at Microsoft, though the role was ultimately filled by Satya Nadella. In October 2014, all major Google products, including Chrome, Android, applications, and Search, were placed under Sundar Pichai’s leadership.

Sundar Pichai is married to Anjali Pichai, whom he met while studying at the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur. The couple has two children: a son named Kiran Pichai and a daughter named Kavya Pichai.

On August 10, 2015, Larry Page announced that Google had been restructured under the name Alphabet Inc., and that Sundar Pichai had been appointed CEO of Google. Later, on December 4, 2019, Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin announced that they would step down from their roles as President and CEO of Alphabet, while remaining on the company’s board of directors. As a result, Sundar Pichai assumed the role of CEO of Alphabet Inc. in addition to his position as CEO of Google.
