Marco Rubio is a former Republican Senator from Florida who was approved as United States Secretary of State following the nomination by Donald Trump after his election as President of the United States. Rubio was confirmed by the Senate with a unanimous vote of 99–0, becoming the first Latino Secretary of State in U.S. history.
Marco Rubio was born on May 28, 1971, in Miami, Florida, United States. His full name is Marco Antonio Rubio. His father, Mario Rubio Reina, and his mother, Oriales Garcia Rubio, immigrated to the United States from Cuba in 1956, prior to Fidel Castro coming to power. The family became U.S. citizens in 1975. Raised in Miami, Rubio graduated from the University of Florida in 1993 and later earned his law degree with honors from the University of Miami School of Law in 1996.
Rubio entered politics in 1999 when he was elected to the Florida House of Representatives. In 2006, he was chosen as Speaker of the Florida House, a position he held until leaving the state legislature in 2008. In 2010, he was elected to the United States Senate for the first time, representing Florida.
During the 2015 and 2016 United States presidential election cycle, Marco Rubio announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination. His stance on immigration was viewed as unclear by parts of the electorate, and he ultimately lost in the primaries. On March 15, 2016, he officially withdrew from the race.
Throughout the campaign period, Donald Trump mocked Rubio by calling him “Little Marco,” while Rubio targeted Trump by criticizing his famous slogan “Make America Great Again.” Following Trump’s election victory, the two later reconciled. Rubio subsequently established an advisory relationship with Trump and served as an informal foreign policy adviser during Trump’s first presidential term, which began on January 20, 2017.
Known for his hawkish foreign policy stance, Marco Rubio has taken particularly hardline positions against China, Iran, Venezuela, and Cuba. Although he previously made strong critical statements regarding Russia, Rubio is expected to support Trump’s plans aimed at ending the war in Ukraine. Rubio has echoed Trump’s calls by stating that the war in Ukraine has reached a “stalemate” and must be brought to an end.
Marco Rubio married Jeanette Dousdebes Rubio in 1998. The couple has four children: Daniella Rubio, Anthony Rubio, Dominick Rubio, and Amanda Rubio.
