Joaquin Phoenix, born on 28 October 1974 in San Juan, Puerto Rico, is an American actor known for his intense performances and commitment to complex, often psychologically driven roles. His full name is Joaquin Rafael Phoenix. When he was four years old, his family moved to Los Angeles. His father, John Lee Bottom, was a Californian Catholic, while his mother, Arlyn Sharon Dunetz, was the daughter of the Dunetz family, who had migrated from Hungary and Russia to the Bronx.
He is the younger brother of the late actor River Phoenix (1970–1993), whose career and early death deeply influenced Joaquin’s life. He also has four sisters named Jodean Bottom (born 1964), Rain Phoenix (born 1972), Liberty Phoenix (born 1976), and Summer Phoenix (born 1978). In the late 1960s, the Phoenix family joined a religious group called Children of God and worked as missionaries, traveling across South America before settling permanently in the United States in 1977.
Joaquin Phoenix gained major recognition in 1995 when he starred in To Die For (Sonsuz İhtiras), directed by Gus Van Sant, alongside Nicole Kidman, Matt Dillon, Casey Affleck, and Holland Taylor. His performance marked a turning point in his career and established him as a serious dramatic actor.
In 1997, he appeared in U Turn (U Dönüşü), directed by Oliver Stone, sharing the screen with Liv Tyler, Jennifer Lopez, Sean Penn, and Claire Danes. His career continued to rise with his role in Gladiator (2000), directed by Ridley Scott, where he acted alongside Russell Crowe and Oliver Reed, delivering a memorable portrayal of the villainous Emperor Commodus.
In 2007, Joaquin Phoenix starred in We Own the Night (Gecenin İki Yüzü), acting with Eva Mendes, Mark Wahlberg, and Robert Duvall. Later, in 2015, he appeared in Irrational Man (Mantıksız Adam), directed by Woody Allen, where he played the lead role opposite Emma Stone.
Since 2016, Joaquin Phoenix has been in a relationship with American actress Rooney Mara. On 9 February 2020, he was awarded the Academy Award for Best Actor for his powerful performance as Arthur Fleck in Joker, a role that depicted the character’s transformation into the “Clown Prince of Crime” and became one of the most acclaimed performances of his career.
