Story Overview

Joker centers on the fractured life of Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix), a failed stand-up comedian struggling to survive on the margins of society. Socially isolated and emotionally fragile, Arthur lives in a world that constantly rejects and humiliates him, leaving him desperate for human connection and understanding.

Arthur’s life is defined by the masks he wears. By day, he earns a living as a clown, hiding his pain behind forced laughter and painted smiles. By night, he carries an emotional mask shaped by lifelong trauma, mental illness, and suppressed rage—one that can never truly be removed. Raised without a father, Arthur is deeply attached to his mother Penny (Frances Conroy), who affectionately calls him “Happy,” a nickname meant to shield him from the cruelty of reality.

However, repeated acts of bullying, neglect, and systemic indifference gradually erode Arthur’s fragile sense of self. As his mental state deteriorates, the boundary between reality and delusion begins to blur. Cut off from social support and stripped of dignity, Arthur is pushed toward a psychological breaking point.

Slowly descending into darkness, Arthur finds himself swept into a city spiraling with unrest, crime, and moral decay. In embracing the chaos around him, he abandons his former identity and transforms into Joker—a symbol of anarchy and violent rebellion.
