Story Overview

The Last King of Scotland follows the story of Dr. Nicholas Garrigan, a young Scottish physician who arrives in Uganda as part of a humanitarian medical mission. Through an extraordinary twist of fate, Garrigan (James McAvoy) finds himself drawn into the inner circle of one of the most brutal dictators in modern history, President Idi Amin, portrayed by Forest Whitaker. Impressed by Garrigan’s calm demeanor during a crisis and his professional competence, Amin appoints him as his personal doctor and closest confidant.

Initially flattered and intoxicated by his newfound status, Garrigan becomes seduced by power, privilege, and Amin’s charismatic yet unpredictable personality. However, as he witnesses the growing scale of violence, paranoia, and political terror carried out under the dictator’s rule, Garrigan begins to recognize both Amin’s true nature and his own moral complicity within the regime.

As the nightmare deepens, Garrigan desperately attempts to atone for his mistakes and escape Uganda alive. Surrounded by betrayal, fear, and escalating brutality, his struggle becomes one of survival as much as conscience. The Last King of Scotland delivers a chilling exploration of power, corruption, and the devastating cost of remaining silent in the face of evil.
