Meloni condemns anti-Olympics protesters in Milan
Giorgia Meloni strongly criticized demonstrators following anti–Winter Olympics protests held in Milan, describing participants as “enemies of Italy and the Italian people.”
In a statement shared on social media, Giorgia Meloni stressed that thousands of workers and volunteers are committed to ensuring the success of the 2026 Milan–Cortina Winter Olympics. She argued that the event represents a major opportunity for Italy’s international reputation and national pride.
“Enemies of Italy” remark
The prime minister wrote:
There are also those who act as enemies of Italy and the Italian people. By staging demonstrations “against the Olympics,” they are broadcasting these images to half the world. Giorgia Meloni
Giorgia Meloni further alleged that railway cables had been cut in an attempt to disrupt train services, calling the act a serious offense. She expressed solidarity with law enforcement, stating that authorities would take necessary action against those responsible for the unrest.
What happened during the protest?
On Tuesday evening, unions and several civic groups organized a march in Milan opposing the 2026 Milan–Cortina Winter Olympics. Protesters criticized deforestation linked to Olympic infrastructure projects in Cortina d’Ampezzo and voiced objections to certain sports policies, including concerns about the exclusion of transgender athletes.
Tensions escalated toward the end of the demonstration. According to reports, some individuals threw fireworks at police officers. Security forces responded with tear gas to disperse the crowd. Officials have not yet confirmed whether there were injuries.
While the Milan–Cortina 2026 Winter Games are seen as one of Italy’s most significant international events in recent years, debates over their environmental and social impact continue to fuel political controversy.
