Plot Summary

As heroin use spreads rapidly, crime in New York reaches uncontrollable levels. Bound by restrictive laws, the police are increasingly unable to carry out their duties effectively, leaving the city trapped in a losing battle against organized crime.

Bobby Green (Joaquin Phoenix), the manager of a nightclub owned by the Russian mafia, lives a morally reckless life while trying to keep his distance from the escalating violence. Hidden beneath this dangerous lifestyle lies a secret he desperately protects from the mob: his brother Joseph Grusinsky (Mark Wahlberg) is a dedicated police officer, following in the footsteps of their legendary father, Bert Grusinsky (Robert Duvall), one of New York’s most respected lawmen.
