Plot Summary

World-renowned oceanographer and documentary filmmaker Steve Zissou (Bill Murray) sets out on an obsessive expedition to hunt the mysterious Jaguar Shark, a creature believed to have killed his longtime partner during their most recent film shoot. Elusive, possibly mythical, and never clearly seen, the shark becomes both a literal and symbolic target.

As Zissou’s once-legendary crew struggles with dwindling funding, personal conflicts, and fading fame, new and eccentric members join the voyage. What begins as a quest for revenge gradually turns into a journey marked by disappointment, fragile masculinity, and unresolved emotional wounds.

With its meticulously stylized visuals, dry humor, and melancholic undertone, the film transcends a conventional sea adventure. Instead, it presents an introspective portrait of a man confronting the collapse of his own myth, drifting between irony and sincerity in the vast openness of the ocean.
