The Game (1997)
Official Trailer
Plot Summary
Nicholas Van Orton (Michael Douglas) is a wealthy, highly intelligent investment banker whose life is defined by absolute control, rigid routines, and emotional isolation. Haunted by the traumatic suicide of his father, Nicholas has built his existence around precision and predictability, believing that discipline is the only safeguard against chaos.
Everything changes on his birthday when his estranged younger brother Conrad (Sean Penn) reappears with an unusual gift: a membership card to a mysterious company known as Consumer Recreation Services. CRS promises a personalized “game” designed to challenge its participants in ways they will never forget. Initially skeptical, Nicholas soon finds himself drawn into a series of strange, unsettling events that blur the boundaries between reality and illusion.
As the game escalates, Nicholas’s carefully constructed world begins to collapse. Financial security, personal safety, and even his sense of identity are systematically stripped away. Unsure whom to trust and convinced that every encounter may be part of an elaborate conspiracy, Nicholas is forced to confront his deepest fears and long-buried emotional wounds.
Relentlessly tense and psychologically intricate, The Game explores themes of control, paranoia, and rebirth, leading its protagonist toward a final revelation that challenges not only his perception of the game itself, but the meaning of his entire life.
