Syriana (2005)

Official Trailer

Plot Summary

Syriana is a complex and multi-layered political thriller set within the shadowy world of global oil politics. The story begins with the ambitious and reform-minded Prince Nasir (Alexander Siddig), who seeks to reshape his country’s energy policies. By awarding valuable natural gas rights to a Chinese company instead of an American energy giant, he triggers a chain reaction that disrupts long-standing geopolitical alliances.

Meanwhile, oil executive Jimmy Pope (Chris Cooper) gains strategic importance after securing a major drilling contract in Kazakhstan. His company becomes a key target for merger with a powerful American corporation, drawing the attention of the U.S. Department of Justice. As legal investigations unfold, ambitious lawyers and corporate players navigate a web of influence, corruption, and high-stakes negotiation.

At the center of the intelligence world stands veteran CIA operative Bob Barnes (George Clooney), nearing the end of his career. During a mission in Tehran, a critical weapon goes missing, raising alarms across international security networks. Upon returning to Washington, Bob is assigned a final covert mission—one that could alter the balance of power: the assassination of Prince Nasir.

Through intersecting storylines of politicians, businessmen, intelligence agents, and migrant workers, the film exposes the hidden mechanisms driving the global energy industry. Each character, knowingly or not, plays a role in a vast system where personal decisions ripple outward, shaping the political and economic fate of nations.
