Story Overview

After being unjustly imprisoned for years, Benjamin Barker returns to London under the new identity of Sweeney Todd (Johnny Depp), a grim and vengeful barber determined to settle the score with the man who destroyed his life. Reclaiming his old barbershop above Mrs. Lovett’s pie shop, Todd reunites with the eccentric baker Mrs. Lovett (Helena Bonham Carter), who becomes both his confidant and accomplice in a dark plan for revenge. Todd’s ultimate target is the corrupt Judge Turpin (Alan Rickman), the man who falsely condemned him and took his wife and daughter away.

As Todd waits for the perfect opportunity to confront the judge, his violent path begins when the flamboyant Italian barber Pirelli (Sacha Baron Cohen) recognizes his true identity and threatens to expose him. Forced into a desperate act, Todd kills him, leaving the pair with a troubling problem: what to do with the body. Mrs. Lovett quickly proposes a shocking solution that will transform her failing pie shop into the most popular bakery in London—using the victims of Todd’s razor as the secret ingredient in her meat pies.

Meanwhile, the young sailor Anthony (Jamie Campbell Bower), who once rescued Todd at sea, falls passionately in love with Johanna (Jayne Wisener), Todd’s daughter, who is being kept under the oppressive guardianship of Judge Turpin. Determined to free her, Anthony vows to rescue Johanna and marry her. As Mrs. Lovett dreams of a peaceful life by the sea with Todd, the barber’s obsession with vengeance grows darker, driving him further into a cycle of violence that threatens to consume everyone around him.
