Merchant Of Venice (2005)
Official Trailer
Plot Summary
The Merchant of Venice is set in 18th-century Venice, where love, loyalty, and vengeance collide in a society governed by rigid laws and deep prejudice.
Young and ambitious Bassanio (Joseph Fiennes) is determined to win the heart of the beautiful and wealthy Portia (Lynn Collins). However, surrounded by many suitors, Portia is far from easily attainable. In order to pursue her, Bassanio needs money, which leads him to seek help from his close friend Antonio (Jeremy Irons), a kind-hearted merchant.
Antonio’s fortune, however, is tied up in merchant ships at sea. Desperate to help his friend, he turns to Shylock (Al Pacino), a Jewish moneylender he has long mistreated due to his practice of lending money without interest. Sensing an opportunity for revenge, Shylock agrees to lend the money without interest—but under a chilling condition.
If the debt is not repaid on time, Shylock will be entitled to take a pound of Antonio’s flesh. What begins as a financial agreement soon transforms into a moral and legal battle, exposing themes of mercy, justice, discrimination, and the cost of hatred.
Faithful yet grounded in realism, The Merchant of Venice offers a powerful adaptation of Shakespeare’s classic tragedy, highlighting the human consequences of prejudice and the fragile balance between law and compassion.
