Plot Summary

Meet Joe Black tells a poetic and philosophical story about life, love, and mortality through an unexpected encounter with death itself.

William Parrish (Anthony Hopkins), a wealthy and powerful media tycoon, is approaching his 65th birthday when he comes face to face with a mysterious young man who introduces himself as Joe Black (Brad Pitt). Unknown to William at first, Joe is the physical embodiment of Death, who has come to escort him to the afterlife.

Before meeting William, Joe had briefly encountered Susan Parrish (Claire Forlani), William’s daughter, and died in a tragic car accident shortly after they parted ways. Returning to the world in the body of that young man, Joe begins living in William’s home, seeking to understand human life beyond his eternal role.

As William prepares for the inevitable, Joe becomes increasingly fascinated by human emotions—particularly love. His growing relationship with Susan complicates his mission, forcing him to confront feelings he has never known.
