Roger Federer, born in 1981, is a world-famous Swiss professional tennis player. Despite his young age, he achieved championships in many tournaments early in his career and finished the ATP 2006 tennis season at the top.
Roger Federer was born on August 8, 1981, in the Münchenstein suburb near the center of Basel, Switzerland, as the child of Robert Federer and Lynette Federer. His South African-born mother Lynette met his father Robert during a business trip Robert made for the company Ciba-Geigy.
Roger Federer began playing tennis at the age of eight. By the time he was ten, he was already attracting attention with his strong right-handed strokes and competitive attitude. He also had an interest in football and occasionally attended training sessions, but this indecision ended when he realized he loved tennis more. After becoming the Swiss Junior Champion at the age of thirteen, he left home and began training at the Swiss National Tennis Academy. At sixteen, he became the world’s number one junior tennis player. The year 1998 was his final season in junior tournaments. He ended that year by winning the Wimbledon Juniors and the prestigious season-ending Orange Bowl. He finished the 1998 season as the ITF World Junior Champion and thus stepped into his professional career.
Roger Federer won his first ATP tournament in February 2001 in Milan, after which his rapid rise in the world men’s tennis rankings began. Representing his country in the Davis Cup, he won three matches and eliminated the United States 3–2 in the first round. He reached the quarterfinals at both the French Open and Wimbledon, and in the fourth round defeated Pete Sampras, ending the American tennis legend’s 31-match Wimbledon winning streak. In 2003, Federer won six tournaments, including his first Grand Slam title at Wimbledon, where he defeated Mark Philippoussis in the final. In 2004, playing without a coach, Federer won three of the four most important tournaments, including Wimbledon, the US Open and the Australian Open, becoming the world’s number one male tennis player.
In 2005, although he was eliminated in the semifinals of the Australian Open after losing to Russian tennis player Marat Safin, he maintained his number one position in the world rankings. In 2006, he further raised his level of success and in July defeated Rafael Nadal to claim his fourth Wimbledon title. That same year, he won the Australian Open by defeating Marcos Baghdatis. The International Tennis Federation selected Swiss player Roger Federer as the Men’s World Champion Tennis Player of the Year in 2006. At the age of 25, Federer finished as champion for the third consecutive year. Additionally, after finishing the ATP 2006 tennis season at the top, he won 12 of the 17 singles tournaments he entered and ended the season with a record prize money total of 8 million dollars.
Alongside his tennis career, Roger Federer founded the Roger Federer Foundation in 2003, aiming to support projects produced especially for the benefit of children in South Africa. In 2005, he mobilized tennis players to play matches to aid victims in tsunami-affected regions. He also put his signed rackets up for sale for the benefit of UNICEF.
Despite being very young and still at the beginning of his tennis career, many tennis players—including Rod Laver, John McEnroe, and Federer’s childhood idol Boris Becker—predicted that Federer could equal the record of legendary tennis player Pete Sampras, who had won fourteen Grand Slam titles. With his sharp intelligence on court, dominant forehand strokes, and rare unforced errors, Roger Federer was expected to win many more tournaments with his consistent style of play until the end of his career.
Roger Federer’s sister, who lives near Basel, is a nurse. The tennis player speaks German, French, and English fluently and uses all three languages during press conferences.
In 2009, Roger Federer married tennis player Mirka Federer. He has four children: twins Myla Rose Federer and Charlene Riva Federer (born 2009), and twins Leo Federer and Lenny Federer (born 2014).
In January 2017, at the Australian Open men’s singles final held in Melbourne, Roger Federer defeated Rafael Nadal 3–2 to become champion. The Swiss tennis player, who became the male player with the most Grand Slam singles titles in history, raised his record to 18 championships.
On July 16, 2017, Roger Federer won the Wimbledon men’s singles final by defeating Croatian opponent Marin Cilic 3–0. In 2017, Federer did not participate in the French Open but won both the Australian Open and Wimbledon, and also claimed titles at Indian Wells Masters, Miami Open, and Halle Open, achieving five championships that season.
On January 28, 2018, in the Australian Open final, Roger Federer defeated Marin Cilic in five sets to win his 20th Grand Slam title. He became the player who alone won 10 percent of the 200 Grand Slam tournaments played since 1968.
Roger Federer won a total of 20 Grand Slam titles: six at the Australian Open, eight at Wimbledon, five at the US Open, and one at the French Open.
The Swiss tennis player Roger Federer announced that the Laver Cup to be held in London, England, between September 23–25, 2022, would be the final tournament of his professional career.
