Carlos Alcaraz makes history at the Australian Open with epic final victory

Spanish star Carlos Alcaraz produced a historic performance at the Australian Open, defeating Serbian legend Novak Djokovic 3–1 in a gripping men’s singles final in Melbourne. With this victory, Alcaraz claimed his first Australian Open title and became the youngest male player in tennis history to complete a career Grand Slam.

A final for the ages in Melbourne

The championship match between world No.1 Alcaraz and four-time finalist Djokovic delivered drama, intensity and momentum swings worthy of a Grand Slam classic. Djokovic began strongly, breaking serve early and controlling the opening set, which he won 6–2 in just 33 minutes.

Alcaraz responded with authority in the second set, raising his aggression from the baseline and increasing his winner count. The 22-year-old Spaniard broke serve twice to take the set 6–2 and level the match. In the third set, as Djokovic’s unforced errors increased, Alcaraz showed remarkable composure and defensive skill, winning it 6–3 to move one set away from the title.

The fourth set proved the most dramatic. Djokovic fought relentlessly, including an 11-minute service game that showcased his resilience and experience. However, Alcaraz broke serve in the 12th game to seal the set 7–5 and clinch the match in 3 hours and 2 minutes.

Career Grand Slam, records and emotional moments

With this triumph, Alcaraz completed victories at all four major tournaments — Roland Garros, Wimbledon, the US Open and now the Australian Open — becoming the youngest man ever to achieve a career Grand Slam at 22 years and 272 days. In doing so, he surpassed the 88-year-old record set by Don Budge in 1938.

Alcaraz also became only the ninth male player in tennis history to complete a career Grand Slam, joining legends such as Fred Perry, Rod Laver, Andre Agassi, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.

Djokovic, who missed the chance to claim a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam title, congratulated his opponent with grace despite visible disappointment. At 38, the Serbian star also raised questions about his future at the Australian Open, a tournament he has won 10 times.

I never thought I would be at another Grand Slam closing ceremony again. Who knows what tomorrow brings… but it has been a wonderful journey. Novak Djokovic

Djokovic also praised the young champion with a smile:

You have achieved something historic, something legendary. You are still very young, and I am sure we will face each other many more times in the years to come. Novak Djokovic

Prize money

As Australian Open champion, Carlos Alcaraz earned AUD 4.15 million (approximately £2.15 million) in prize money. Runner-up Novak Djokovic left Melbourne with AUD 2.15 million.
