Ingrid Bergman was born on August 29, 1915, in Stockholm, Sweden. Her mother, Frieda Henrietta Bergman, was German, and her father, Justus Samuel Bergman, was Swedish. She lost her mother at the age of two and her father at thirteen, after which she was raised by her aunts. At the age of seventeen, she received acting lessons at the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Sweden.

She made her film debut in Landskamp (1932) at the age of seventeen. Her breakthrough came in 1939 with Intermezzo: A Love Story, which attracted international attention and led her to Hollywood. Despite sharing a surname, she had no relation to legendary director Ingmar Bergman.

In 1942, Ingrid Bergman starred opposite Humphrey Bogart in the Hollywood classic Casablanca, directed by Michael Curtiz. Her portrayal of Ilsa Lund became one of the most iconic performances in film history and firmly established her as a Hollywood star.

In 1943, she starred with Gary Cooper in For Whom the Bell Tolls, the first cinematic adaptation of Ernest Hemingway’s novel of the same name. Her performance further solidified her international acclaim.

Ingrid Bergman worked extensively with director Alfred Hitchcock, starring in Spellbound (1945) alongside Gregory Peck, Notorious (1946) with Cary Grant, and Under Capricorn (1949). These collaborations are regarded among the finest works of her career.

In 1950, she married Italian screenwriter and director Roberto Rossellini and moved to Italy, where she appeared in several of his films. In 1956, she performed on stage in Paris in the play Tea and Sympathy, marking her return to public favor. That same year, she returned to Hollywood.

Her triumphant comeback came with Anastasia (1956), directed by Anatole Litvak, in which she starred opposite Yul Brynner. For this role, she won the Academy Award for Best Actress at the 29th Academy Awards.

Ingrid Bergman returned permanently to Sweden in 1978. In 1974, she appeared in Murder on the Orient Express, directed by Sidney Lumet, alongside an ensemble cast including Albert Finney, Lauren Bacall, Sean Connery, Anthony Perkins, Vanessa Redgrave, and Richard Widmark. Her performance earned her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.

In 1978, she starred in Autumn Sonata, directed by Ingmar Bergman, delivering one of the most powerful performances of her later career. In 1982, she portrayed Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir in the television film A Woman Called Golda, opposite Leonard Nimoy.

Ingrid Bergman died on August 29, 1982, her 67th birthday, in London, England, from breast cancer. In accordance with her wishes, her body was cremated.
