Alfred Sisley (October 30, 1839 – January 29, 1899) was a British Impressionist painter born in Paris, France. He was one of the early members of the Impressionism movement and devoted almost his entire artistic career to landscape painting. His works frequently depict rivers, bridges, villages, gardens, and countryside scenes around Paris. In 1862, he began studying in the studio of Charles Gleyre, where he met Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Frédéric Bazille. He later worked alongside other Impressionist painters, including Camille Pissarro, and participated in four of the movement's independent exhibitions. His paintings include The Flood at Port-Marly, Snow at Louveciennes, The Bridge at Villeneuve-la-Garenne, and numerous views of Moret-sur-Loing. Although his paintings received limited commercial recognition during his lifetime, they subsequently entered the collections of museums in Europe and the United States.
Early Life and Education
Alfred Sisley was born on October 30, 1839, in Paris to British parents. His father, William Sisley, was a merchant involved in the silk trade, while his mother was Felicia Sell. The family's financial circumstances initially allowed him to pursue his interests without substantial economic difficulties.
In 1857, at the age of eighteen, Sisley was sent to London to study business in preparation for entering his father's commercial activities. During his stay in England, he became interested in painting and studied works by British landscape artists, particularly John Constable and J. M. W. Turner.
He returned to Paris around 1860 and decided to pursue a career as a painter rather than enter the family business.
Artistic Training and Early Career
In 1862, Alfred Sisley enrolled in the studio of Swiss painter Charles Gleyre in Paris, where he met fellow students Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Frédéric Bazille.
The young painters shared an interest in working outdoors and studying the effects of natural light. After Gleyre's studio closed in 1863, they continued painting in the countryside, particularly around the Forest of Fontainebleau.
In 1865, Sisley worked with Monet, Renoir, and other painters in areas near Marlotte and the surrounding villages. His early landscapes were influenced by painters associated with the Barbizon School, including Camille Corot and Charles-François Daubigny.
During this period, Sisley developed an approach based on direct observation of nature, using color and brushwork to depict sunlight, atmospheric conditions, and seasonal changes.
Paris Salon and the Development of Impressionism
For young painters in nineteenth-century France, acceptance into the annual Paris Salon was an established route to public recognition and commercial opportunities.
Alfred Sisley exhibited at the Salon in 1866, 1868, and 1870, although participation did not bring substantial commercial success.
Like Monet and Renoir, he increasingly experimented with painting directly outdoors rather than constructing landscapes entirely in a studio.
His paintings concentrated on the interaction of light, sky, water, and vegetation. He frequently returned to the same locations to observe changes in weather and season.
These methods became characteristic of Impressionist landscape painting during the 1870s.
Franco-Prussian War and Financial Difficulties
The Franco-Prussian War of 1870–1871 significantly affected Alfred Sisley's financial circumstances.
His father's business suffered severe losses and eventually failed, ending the financial support that had allowed Sisley to concentrate on painting.
He also lost paintings and possessions during the disturbances associated with the war and the following period.
From then on, he depended primarily on the sale of his artworks to support himself and his family.
After the war, Sisley lived and painted in villages around Paris, including Louveciennes, Bougival, and Marly-le-Roi.
Art dealer Paul Durand-Ruel began purchasing his paintings in 1872 and helped introduce his work to collectors in France and Britain.
Impressionist Exhibitions and Landscape Painting
In April 1874, Alfred Sisley participated in the first independent Impressionist exhibition in Paris, alongside artists including Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Camille Pissarro, and Berthe Morisot.
That summer, he traveled to England and painted landscapes around Hampton Court and the River Thames.
He also participated in the Impressionist exhibitions of 1876, 1877, and 1882.
His paintings from the 1870s include snowy roads, riverside villages, and views of bridges and canals. He regularly worked around Marly-le-Roi, Louveciennes, and Port-Marly.
One of his recurring subjects was the flooding of the Seine at Port-Marly. He painted the area during floods in 1872 and again in 1876, producing several views of submerged streets, buildings, and reflections on the water.
Among these works, The Flood at Port-Marly (1876) became one of his most widely reproduced paintings.
Later Years in Moret-sur-Loing
In 1880, Alfred Sisley moved to Veneux-Nadon, near Moret-sur-Loing, southeast of Paris. He settled permanently in Moret-sur-Loing in 1889.
The town and surrounding countryside became the subjects of numerous paintings. He depicted the River Loing, bridges, church buildings, canals, and streets under different lighting conditions.
His later works included views of the church at Moret, riverbanks, and landscapes during autumn and winter.
Although he continued exhibiting, his paintings sold inconsistently, and financial difficulties persisted.
In 1897, an exhibition of his works was held at the Galerie Georges Petit in Paris, but it did not substantially improve his financial position.
Marriage and Family
During the 1860s, Alfred Sisley began a relationship with Eugénie Lescouezec, who became his longtime companion.
The couple had two surviving children, Pierre and Jeanne. A third child, Jacques, died in infancy.
Although some older biographies identify 1866 as their marriage date, Sisley and Eugénie were formally married on August 5, 1897, in Cardiff, Wales.
During their visit to Britain, Sisley painted coastal landscapes around Penarth and Langland Bay.
Eugénie died in October 1898, only a few months before Sisley's death.
Death
Alfred Sisley died of throat cancer on January 29, 1899, in Moret-sur-Loing, France, at the age of 59.
He was buried in the cemetery at Moret-sur-Loing.
Following his death, exhibitions and art dealers brought greater attention to his paintings, which were subsequently acquired by museums and collectors.
