Hollywood actor and environmental activist Leonardo DiCaprio has announced a major financial commitment to the global fight against climate change, pledging $20 million through his foundation to support environmental protection efforts around the world.

The Oscar-winning star said the funding will be distributed to more than 100 organisations, with the aim of safeguarding oceans, forests and endangered species while confronting what he described as the urgent and existential threat posed by climate change.

A record-breaking donation from the DiCaprio Foundation

The pledge marks the largest single donation ever made by the foundation established by Leonardo DiCaprio in 1998. Since its launch, the organisation has already distributed close to £60 million to environmental causes, making it one of the most influential celebrity-led climate initiatives globally.

According to the foundation, the grants will support projects focused on wildlife protection, marine conservation and climate action programmes across multiple regions.

Speaking ahead of his appearance at a climate change conference at Yale University, DiCaprio underlined the global scope of the initiative.

“We are proud to support the work of over 100 organisations at home and abroad,” he said. “These grantees are active on the ground, protecting our oceans, forests and endangered species for future generations — and tackling the urgent, existential challenges of climate change.”

Funding targets oceans, forests and indigenous rights

The grants will be allocated across six key areas, reflecting the foundation’s broad environmental strategy. These include climate change mitigation, wildlife and landscape conservation, marine and ocean protection, innovative environmental solutions, indigenous rights, and a dedicated California climate change programme.

Long recognised as one of Hollywood’s most outspoken environmental advocates, Leonardo DiCaprio has used his global profile to draw attention to climate risks at international forums, award ceremonies and academic institutions.

With this latest pledge, the actor reinforces his long-standing message: meaningful climate action requires not only awareness, but sustained financial support for those working directly to protect the planet.
