Twelve Monkeys (1995)

Official Trailer

Plot Summary

Twelve Monkeys unfolds a haunting story that moves back and forth between past and future, blurring the lines between madness and sanity, imagination and reality. The year is 2035, and the world as we know it has effectively ended.

Following a catastrophic biological disaster, 99 percent of the Earth’s population has been wiped out, leaving the planet environmentally devastated and uninhabitable. The few remaining survivors are forced to live underground, relying on fragmented records and fading memories to understand how humanity reached this point of collapse.

In a desperate attempt to change the course of history, scientists send a prisoner, James Cole (Bruce Willis), back in time to gather information about the origins of the deadly virus. His mission is not to prevent the outbreak, but to trace its source and help future scientists develop a cure.

As Cole navigates the past, his grasp on reality begins to fracture. Confined to mental institutions and dismissed as delusional, he crosses paths with psychiatrist Dr. Kathryn Railly (Madeleine Stowe) and the unstable yet charismatic Jeffrey Goines (Brad Pitt). With time itself becoming unreliable, Cole is forced to question whether he is a savior of humanity or merely a man trapped in his own madness.

Dark, philosophical, and relentlessly unsettling, Twelve Monkeys explores fate, free will, and the cyclical nature of time. The film builds toward an inescapable conclusion, suggesting that some events may be impossible to alter, no matter how far one travels through time to change them.
