The Professor and the Madman tells the extraordinary true story behind the creation of the Oxford English Dictionary, one of the most ambitious literary projects in history.

Professor James Murray is a brilliant but relentless scholar who dedicates his life to compiling the first comprehensive edition of the Oxford English Dictionary. Tasked with defining more than ten thousand words, Murray works tirelessly, convinced that the project will redefine the English language and secure his legacy.

During his research, Murray receives an unexpected and astonishing contribution from an asylum for the criminally insane. The sender is Dr. W. C. Minor, a deeply troubled yet intellectually gifted man confined for a violent crime. Minor submits thousands of meticulously researched word definitions, astonishing Murray with both their accuracy and depth.

As the correspondence between the two men intensifies, an unlikely bond forms across the walls of the asylum. Murray becomes increasingly invested in Minor’s fate, while Minor finds purpose and redemption through his scholarly work. Their collaboration challenges the boundaries between genius and madness, compassion and obsession.
