The Humbling (2015)

Official Trailer

Plot Summary

The Humbling follows the quiet collapse of Simon Axler (Al Pacino), a once-revered stage actor who suddenly finds himself stripped of the very talent that defined his identity. Now in his sixties, Axler’s confidence disintegrates after a disastrous performance of Macbeth at a Washington theater, where harsh criticism publicly exposes his decline.

Unable to reconcile his former greatness with his present failure, Axler spirals into a deep depression. His personal life mirrors his professional downfall; his marriage ends, and he retreats into isolation, questioning whether life without acting still holds meaning.

Seeking help, Axler admits himself to a psychiatric facility, where he encounters Sybil (Greta Gerwig), a much younger woman whose unpredictable presence reignites dormant emotions within him. Their unconventional relationship challenges Axler’s understanding of love, aging, and artistic relevance.

Balancing dark humor with emotional fragility, The Humbling is an intimate character study about loss, ego, and the painful confrontation with one’s own limitations. The film explores what remains when applause fades and the stage lights go dark, leaving only the self behind.
