The Gentlemen (2020)
Official Trailer
Plot Summary
The Gentlemen is a sharp, fast-talking crime comedy that dives into the underworld of modern London, where old-school gangsters and new-money opportunists clash over power, territory, and reputation. The film centers on an elaborate criminal ecosystem built on wit, intimidation, and carefully negotiated loyalty.
At the heart of the story is Mickey Pearson, portrayed by Matthew Mcconaughey, an American expatriate who has built a highly profitable marijuana empire beneath the estates of Britain’s elite. Determined to cash out and leave the criminal life behind, Mickey’s planned exit triggers a chain reaction of blackmail, deception, and strategic maneuvering.
A colorful cast of rivals and intermediaries quickly enters the game, including the calculating fixer Fletcher, played by Hugh Grant, whose narrative manipulation becomes a weapon of its own. As stories overlap and truths are distorted, alliances shift and violence lurks beneath the film’s polished, ironic surface.
Stylish, cynical, and driven by razor-sharp dialogue, The Gentlemen embraces classic gangster tropes while updating them with contemporary swagger. The film explores masculinity, class tension, and criminal etiquette, delivering a self-aware and entertaining portrait of a world where intelligence and timing can be as lethal as brute force.
