Reign Over Me (2007)

Official Trailer

Plot Summary

Reign Over Me is a deeply emotional drama that explores grief, trauma, and the fragile paths toward healing in the aftermath of unimaginable loss.

Charlie Fineman, a withdrawn and emotionally shattered man portrayed by Adam Sandler, lost his wife and three daughters during the September 11 attacks. Unable to process his grief, Charlie retreats into a shell of isolation, cutting himself off from society, responsibility, and emotional connection.

His life takes an unexpected turn when he reunites with his former college roommate Alan Johnson, played by Don Cheadle. Alan appears to have everything one could want: a successful career, a loving wife, and a stable family life. Yet beneath this seemingly perfect exterior lies a quiet dissatisfaction and emotional fatigue he cannot fully explain.

As Charlie slowly re-enters the world through this renewed friendship, the two men form a bond that proves transformative for both. Charlie begins confronting his suppressed pain, while Alan is forced to re-evaluate his own life, priorities, and emotional honesty.

Balancing moments of warmth, awkward humor, and profound sorrow, Reign Over Me offers a restrained yet powerful meditation on loss and human connection. Rather than focusing on tragedy itself, the film examines the long, uneven process of recovery, suggesting that healing often begins not with answers, but with companionship.
