Nocturnal Animals (2016)

Official Trailer

Plot Summary

Nocturnal Animals is a dark, emotionally charged psychological thriller that operates on two parallel narrative levels, blurring the line between fiction and personal vengeance.

Susan Morrow (Amy Adams), a successful but emotionally distant art gallery owner living in Los Angeles, receives a manuscript from her ex-husband Edward Sheffield (Jake Gyllenhaal), whom she left twenty years earlier. As she begins reading the novel, dedicated to her, Susan is slowly pulled back into the unresolved guilt, emotional cruelty, and moral compromises that defined their past.

The novel within the film follows Tony Hastings (Jake Gyllenhaal), a mild-mannered man whose family road trip descends into a nightmarish spiral of violence and loss after a chance encounter on a desolate Texas highway. The harrowing journey that unfolds is marked by brutality, helplessness, and an unrelenting sense of dread.

As Susan progresses through the manuscript, the fictional suffering mirrors her own emotional history. The novel becomes a symbolic act of reckoning, forcing her to confront her choices, her betrayal of Edward, and the life she constructed by sacrificing love for security.

Directed and written by Tom Ford, Nocturnal Animals is a meticulously crafted meditation on revenge, regret, and the destructive power of emotional abandonment. With stark visual contrasts, restrained performances, and an atmosphere thick with moral unease, the film transforms storytelling itself into an instrument of judgment.
