Akon, whose full name is Aliaune Damala Bouga Time Puru Nacka Lu Lu Lu Badara Akon Thiam, is a Senegalese-American singer, rapper, songwriter, record producer, and entrepreneur. Born on April 16, 1973, he achieved international recognition with his debut album Trouble (2004) and became one of the commercially successful R&B and hip-hop performers of the 2000s. His second album, Konvicted (2006), produced worldwide hits including Smack That with Eminem and I Wanna Love You with Snoop Dogg. He founded the record labels Konvict Muzik and KonLive Distribution, supporting the careers of performers including Lady Gaga, T-Pain, and Colby O'Donis. A Muslim of Senegalese heritage, he is also involved in business ventures and charitable projects in Africa.
Early Life and Family Background
Akon was born on April 16, 1973, in St. Louis, Missouri, United States, to Senegalese parents. His father, Mor Thiam, is a jazz percussionist, while his mother, Kiné Gueye Thiam, is a Senegalese singer and dancer.
Shortly after his birth, his family returned to Dakar, Senegal, where he spent his early childhood. At approximately seven years old, he moved with his family to New Jersey in the United States.
Growing up in a musical family, Akon became familiar with traditional West African percussion, jazz, and African popular music. After moving to the United States, he developed an interest in hip-hop and contemporary R&B.
During his youth, he encountered legal difficulties and spent periods in detention. He subsequently described these experiences as an influence on his early songwriting, particularly songs dealing with imprisonment and personal struggles. However, some of his publicly reported claims about extended imprisonment and organized automobile theft were later disputed by investigative reporting.
Music Career and International Breakthrough
Akon began developing his music in a home recording studio, combining melodic singing with hip-hop production and African musical influences. His recordings attracted the attention of SRC Records and Universal Records, leading to the release of his debut studio album, Trouble, in June 2004.
The album's first single, Locked Up, became an international hit, reaching the top ten of the Billboard Hot 100 and the top five in the United Kingdom. Another single, Lonely, reached number one in the United Kingdom, Australia, and Germany, significantly increasing his international popularity.
The success of Trouble helped establish Akon as a prominent new performer in R&B and hip-hop. In 2005, he expanded his business activities by establishing the record label Konvict Muzik.
In November 2006, he released his second studio album, Konvicted, which achieved multi-platinum sales in the United States. The album included Smack That featuring Eminem, I Wanna Love You featuring Snoop Dogg, and Don't Matter. Both I Wanna Love You and Don't Matter reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100.
His third studio album, Freedom, was released in December 2008. Featuring a stronger dance-pop influence, it included Right Now (Na Na Na), I'm So Paid, and Beautiful. The album continued his commercial success across international music markets.
Major Collaborations and Record Production
Alongside his solo career, Akon became a frequently requested collaborator in hip-hop, R&B, and pop music. In 2007, he recorded I'll Still Kill with 50 Cent, whose real name is Curtis James Jackson. He also appeared on We Takin' Over by DJ Khaled, alongside T.I., Rick Ross, Fat Joe, Birdman, and Lil Wayne.
Other collaborations included What You Got with Colby O'Donis, What's Love with Shaggy, and Dangerous with Canadian rapper Kardinal Offishall. Released in 2008, Dangerous became a major international hit and reached the top five of the Billboard Hot 100.
Through Konvict Muzik and KonLive Distribution, Akon helped develop recording artists including T-Pain and Lady Gaga. His early professional support for Lady Gaga contributed to her entry into the mainstream pop industry. He also worked with Gwen Stefani on The Sweet Escape, which became an international hit in 2007.
A longtime admirer of Michael Jackson, Akon collaborated with the singer on Hold My Hand, a recording originally developed before Jackson's death in 2009 and officially released as a single in 2010. He also worked with Whitney Houston on Like I Never Left.
Additional collaborations with artists including David Guetta, Lionel Richie, and other international performers extended his influence beyond American hip-hop and R&B.
Later Albums and Musical Projects
Following Freedom, Akon continued recording and producing music, although his release schedule became less regular. He developed the proposed album Stadium, which was announced during the 2010s but did not receive its originally planned release as a completed studio album.
In 2019, he returned with two projects exploring different musical traditions. El Negreeto incorporated Latin American and reggaeton influences, while Akonda emphasized African popular music and Afrobeats.
His subsequent releases included the EP Ain't No Peace (2020) and further singles and collaborative recordings. On April 24, 2026, he released the studio album Beautiful Day, featuring a combination of pop, Afrobeats, dancehall, and Latin-influenced music.
He also recorded Oh Africa for the period surrounding the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. The song featured Keri Hilson and was associated with an international charitable initiative.
In May 2010, Akon performed in Istanbul, Turkey, at KüçükÇiftlik Park in the Maçka district.
Business Ventures and Fashion
In addition to music, Akon established businesses associated with entertainment, fashion, and investment. His music enterprises included Konvict Muzik and KonLive Distribution, through which he supported recording artists and production projects.
In 2008, he launched the fashion brand ALIAUNE through a partnership with Turkish clothing company Orka Group. The venture expanded his commercial interests beyond recorded music.
He has also discussed investments and business interests connected with diamond mining in South Africa and aviation ventures in Senegal. His investments and entrepreneurial activities attracted considerable media attention, although some reported ventures were not accompanied by independently documented financial details.
During the height of his commercial success, he appeared on high-earning musician lists published by Forbes, with annual earnings reported in the tens of millions of dollars.
Philanthropy and African Development Projects
Akon has participated in charitable initiatives intended to support disadvantaged communities in Africa. In 2007, he established the Konfidence Foundation, an organization associated with educational and humanitarian assistance for children and communities in Senegal.
He subsequently launched Akon Lighting Africa in 2014, an initiative promoting access to electricity through solar energy technology. The project focused on providing lighting and electricity infrastructure to communities where access to reliable power remained limited.
These activities became an important part of his public identity as a musician and entrepreneur with continuing ties to Africa.
Akon City Projects in Senegal and Uganda
In September 2020, Akon presented plans for Akon City, a proposed futuristic development near Mbodiène on Senegal's Atlantic coast, approximately 100 miles from Dakar. The project was announced with an estimated investment value of $6 billion and plans for residential buildings, hotels, commercial facilities, hospitals, and entertainment infrastructure.
The proposed city was intended to occupy approximately 850 hectares and incorporate modern architecture, renewable energy, and a digital currency known as Akoin. Construction was initially expected to begin in 2021.
However, the project experienced major delays and did not develop according to the announced timetable. In June 2025, Senegal's state tourism development agency, SAPCO, confirmed that the original Akon City project had been abandoned following an agreement with its promoter. Officials announced that a more conventional real estate development was being considered for the site.
On April 6, 2021, Akon also announced a proposed city development in Uganda. During a press conference in Kampala, he stated that the Ugandan government would provide approximately 260 hectares for a new urban project. He proposed completing the development by 2036 and incorporating Akoin into its economy. The proposal did not establish that the city had been constructed or completed.
Personal Life
Akon identifies as Muslim and has discussed the influence of Islam on his upbringing and personal beliefs.
He has maintained a relatively private family life despite his international celebrity. He has been associated with Tomeka Thiam, although public accounts of his marriages and relationships have varied.
He is a father and has spoken publicly about his children and family responsibilities. His Senegalese background remains an important aspect of his personal identity, and he maintains connections with both Senegal and the United States.
