Eminem is an American famous rap music artist and cinema actor.

His real name is Marshall Bruce Mathers III. The controversial rapper Eminem was born on October 17, 1973, in St. Joseph, a small settlement near Kansas. His mother is Deborah R. Nelson-Mathers and his father is Marshall Bruce Mathers Jr.. His father abandoned the family before he was born.

Mathers spent most of his childhood moving from city to city with his mother. These constant relocations formed the foundation of the aggressive Eminem persona that the world would later come to know. When he was 12 years old, his mother chose Detroit as their permanent place of residence. From an early age, he developed a deep interest in hip hop and rap music. Living with his mother in a trailer home in a predominantly African-American suburb of Detroit, he attended Lincoln Junior High School and Osborne High School. Due to his aggressive personality, lack of interest in school, and harsh temperament, he was expelled in the ninth grade. After leaving school, Marshall immersed himself directly into the hip hop scene and began spending time with rap groups such as Basement Productions, The New Jacks, and D12.

During this period, he also worked as a cook and dishwasher in a restaurant for minimum wage.

Unable to find the inner peace and justice he needed at home, Mathers sought the life he wanted in the streets and within hip hop culture. Adopting the name Eminem, he entered a life where he would be defined as the “angry and strange white kid” among Black communities.

In 1996, Eminem released what can be considered his first album, Infinite, through the independent record label FBT. With this album, he made a quiet but meaningful entrance into the music world. Although “Infinite” was raw and technically underdeveloped, it clearly reflected Eminem’s passion and potential. His exaggerated vocal style, violent lyrics, and especially his being white quickly attracted attention. Rap guru Dr. Dre happened to hear this demo and later signed Eminem after he placed second in the MC battle category at the 1997 Rap Olympics. This signature became a turning point in Mathers’ career, and a few years later he released the highly impactful album Slim Shady.

The album exploded in popularity due to MTV exposure, Eminem’s sensational personality, and the controversies surrounding him. Alongside heavy criticism, it brought numerous awards and a massive fan base. With his aggressive lyrics, provocative behavior on TV and radio programs, and controversial public image, Eminem left a lasting mark not only on hip hop but on the entire entertainment industry. Especially the music videos for songs like My Name Is... and Just Don’t Give a F*, which mocked famous figures ranging from Bill Clinton to Marilyn Manson, caused major reactions. Despite all the negative criticism, the album reached number two on the best-selling albums list in the United States.

As a result of this success, Eminem collaborated with many artists such as Missy Elliott and Dido. Before the success of this album faded, he released his next album, The Marshall Mathers LP. Entering the charts at number one on its release day, the album doubled the success of “Slim Shady” and turned Eminem into a pop star. He was declared the most successful and best-selling rap artist since 2Pac and Snoop Doggy Dogg. Despite criticism, legal battles, and family issues, this album earned him the title of most successful artist at the 2000 Grammy Awards and gave him the opportunity to release an album with his former group D12.

The following two years were no different for Eminem. Even without releasing a new album, he remained constantly in the spotlight through various projects, interviews, and a scandal-filled private life. Eventually, he presented his new songs to listeners under the album The Eminem Show.

In July 2000, Eminem became the first white person to appear on the cover of The Source magazine.

In 2000, he released “The Marshall Mathers LP,” which many consider to be his best album. In this album, he openly attacked pop stars such as Britney Spears and boy bands like *NSYNC. In the first single, The Real Slim Shady, he mocked these celebrities and even claimed that Christina Aguilera performed oral sex on Fred Durst and Carson Daly. His public feuds with celebrities boosted album sales, and with the support of songs like The Way I Am and Stan, the album sold 9 million copies. After this success, Eminem decided to become a producer and founded Shady Records.

In 1999, he won two Grammy Awards for Best Solo Rap Performance and Best Rap Album. In 2001, he added three more Grammy Awards to his collection.

D12 is a group founded by Eminem and five of his friends from Detroit. Their first album produced by Eminem, Devil’s Night, was released in 2001 under Shady Records but did not achieve the same commercial success as Eminem’s solo work. However, after Eminem became a global star, the group gained success with the album D12 World released in 2004. Group members include Bizarre, Swift, Kon Artis, and Kuniva, who are currently working on solo albums. Another group member, and Eminem’s closest friend, Proof, was killed in a nightclub shooting.

Although he portrayed his own life in the film 8 Mile and the movie was successful, Eminem stated that he did not enjoy acting. With the song Lose Yourself created for the film, he won the Academy Award for Best Original Song at the 75th Academy Awards in 2003.

Eminem ranked 82nd on Rolling Stone's list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. Additionally, he was named the greatest rapper of all time by Vibe magazine in 2008.

At a young age, Eminem completely cut ties with his mother. In 1999, he married Kimberly Anne Scott, and they had a daughter named Hailie Jade Scott. He also adopted Alaina, the daughter of Kimberly Scott’s sister. Years after their divorce, the couple attempted to reconcile but divorced again due to incompatibility.
