Britney Spears is an American pop music singer who rose to global fame at a young age and became one of the most influential pop icons of the late 1990s and 2000s. She was born on December 2, 1981, in the U.S. state of Mississippi to Jamie Spears and Lynn Spears. Due to her early passion for music, she joined a children's dance group at a young age and later appeared in one of Disney’s children’s programs. At just eight years old, she was the youngest member of the show. Her talent quickly attracted the attention of producers, leading her to receive training at the Broadway Dance Center and to appear in television commercials.
During this period, she continued auditioning for Disney and was eventually selected for The Mickey Mouse Club. Because she was considered too young at the time, one of the producers introduced her to an agency in New York, allowing her to attend a performing arts school on Broadway for three years. Her brother Bryan Spears (b. 1977) later became one of her managers, while her sister Jamie Lynn Spears (b. 1991) pursued a career as an actress and singer. In her childhood years, Britney also participated in school gymnastics classes and sang in a church choir.
After three years of dance and music education, Britney joined a pop group at age 15 and released her first album the following year. She worked with producers associated with Whitney Houston and Backstreet Boys. At just 18 years old, she caused a worldwide sensation with the song Baby One More Time. Produced by Max Martin and Eric Foster White, the album sold over six million copies worldwide and created massive impact at the 1999 MTV Music Awards.
In 2000, she released her second album Oops!... I Did It Again, which sold 1.32 million copies in its first week, setting a record for the highest first-week sales by a female artist since tracking began in 1991. Her 2001 album Britney followed with 750,000 first-week sales. Her collaboration with Aerosmith on Walk This Way further cemented her status as a global superstar.
Alongside her music career, she founded a record label, appeared in films, went on controversial tours, and frequently made headlines due to her colorful personal life. In 2001, she released the album Britney, which reflected a more mature image. She also starred in the film Crossroads, which, despite being a box-office failure, gained notoriety as one of the year’s worst films.
In 2002, she ended her four-year relationship with Justin Timberlake. In 2003, she released In the Zone, with the lead single Me Against the Music performed alongside Madonna. Her personal life continued to attract attention with brief marriages, engagements, and constant media scrutiny. Her 2004 album My Prerogative further kept her in the spotlight.
In September 2004, Britney launched her first perfume Curious, earning $12 million and generating $100 million within a year. She followed this success with her second fragrance Fantasy. With an estimated fortune of $100 million, she was ranked as the 12th richest woman in the world at the time. A wax statue depicting her dance pose from I'm a Slave 4 U was unveiled at London’s Madame Tussauds museum, where it is still exhibited.
Marriages:
1st Marriage: On January 3, 2004, she married her childhood friend Jason Allen Alexander and divorced him on January 5, 2004.
2nd Marriage: In September 2004, she married dancer Kevin Federline. They divorced in 2007. They have two sons: Sean Preston (born September 14, 2005) and Jayden James (born September 12, 2006).
3rd Marriage: She married model Sam Asghari, whom she met during the filming of the Slumber Party music video, on June 10, 2022. They divorced on May 3, 2024.
Following her divorce from Kevin Federline, legal battles over child custody deeply affected her mental health. She entered rehabilitation, and her financial assets were transferred to her father Jamie Spears. Despite ongoing struggles, she continued working on new music and performances.
On December 2, 2008, she released the album Circus, which climbed 96 spots in its second week to reach number one on U.S. charts, marking one of the largest jumps in chart history. It sold 505,507 copies in its first week. Her 2011 album Femme Fatale was released on March 29.
In 2015, her Las Vegas residency Piece of Me significantly contributed to the city’s economy. As recognition, the Mayor of Las Vegas presented her with the symbolic key to the city and declared the fifth day of November each year as “Britney Day.”
