Garden State (2004)

Official Trailer

Plot Summary

Garden State follows Andrew Largeman, a struggling actor living in Los Angeles, who returns to New Jersey after years of emotional distance to attend his mother’s funeral. Long detached from his family and heavily medicated, Andrew is forced to confront the unresolved tensions of his past, particularly his complicated relationship with his father (Ian Holm).

During this unexpected homecoming, Andrew meets Sam (Natalie Portman), an eccentric and emotionally open young woman whose unconventional outlook on life immediately disrupts his carefully maintained detachment. Sam’s presence introduces Andrew to experiences and feelings he has long suppressed, offering him a rare sense of connection and authenticity.

As Andrew reconnects with old friends and revisits familiar places, the film explores themes of emotional paralysis, grief, and the quiet fear of adulthood. Through understated humor and introspective storytelling, Garden State captures a generation’s search for meaning, belonging, and the courage required to truly feel alive.
