Plot Summary

Eastern Promises follows Anna (Naomi Watts), an idealistic midwife working in London, whose life becomes unexpectedly entangled with the dangerous world of the Russian mafia. When a young Russian woman dies during childbirth in her arms, Anna is left with only one clue to the girl’s identity—a personal diary written in Russian. Determined to uncover the truth and locate the baby’s surviving family, Anna begins to investigate the contents of the diary.

Her search leads her deep into the shadowy underworld of the Russian criminal network operating in the city. Along the way she encounters Nikolai (Viggo Mortensen), a mysterious and seemingly loyal member of the mafia. Nikolai’s role within the organization is to dispose of bodies and erase evidence, ensuring that the crimes of the syndicate remain hidden. Unbeknownst to Anna, he continues his duties while carefully navigating the complex hierarchy of the criminal empire.

As Anna pursues the diary’s secrets, she gradually discovers that the information it contains could expose brutal crimes and save innocent lives. Meanwhile, Nikolai’s true position within the organization becomes increasingly ambiguous, blurring the lines between loyalty, survival, and justice.
