Dog Day Afternoon (1975)
Official Trailer
Plot Summary
Dog Day Afternoon takes place on a sweltering Brooklyn afternoon and tells the story of a bank robbery that spirals into chaos.
Two small-time criminals who have spent their lives on the losing side of luck decide to take one last chance. Sonny (Al Pacino), the impulsive mastermind, and his quiet, nervous partner Sal (John Cazale) attempt what they believe to be a carefully planned bank heist. Almost immediately, everything goes wrong.
The failed robbery quickly turns into a public spectacle. Police units surround the bank, crowds gather outside, television cameras broadcast the standoff live, and even a pizza delivery becomes part of the unfolding drama. What was meant to be a clean job transforms into an absurd yet intensely dramatic circus.
Directed by Sidney Lumet, Dog Day Afternoon blends raw tension with dark humor, capturing the psychological unraveling of its characters under relentless pressure. Written by Frank Pierson and based on a true story, the film earned six Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, and won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.
With unforgettable performances by Al Pacino, John Cazale, Charles Durning, and Chris Sarandon, the film stands as one of the most powerful crime dramas of the 1970s—an explosive mix of energy, emotion, and social commentary that remains timeless.
