Story Overview

Arizona Dream follows Axel Blackmar (Johnny Depp), a young man who moves to New York after the death of his parents and ends up working in a peculiar job counting fish for a large fisheries company. His quiet and unusual routine is suddenly disrupted when his uncle Leo (Jerry Lewis), a flamboyant car dealer living in Arizona, unexpectedly appears and invites him west. Leo is about to get married and wants Axel to serve as his best man—and eventually take over the family business.

When Axel arrives in Arizona, he finds himself in a world completely different from the one he left behind in New York. Surrounded by eccentric personalities and surreal situations, he becomes entangled in the dreams and obsessions of those around him—especially two enigmatic women whose desires and ambitions blur the line between reality and fantasy.

Regarded as one of the most distinctive works of director Emir Kusturica, Arizona Dream blends absurd humor, poetic imagery, and melancholic storytelling. The film’s dreamlike narrative explores themes of freedom, imagination, and the elusive nature of the American dream, creating a surreal cinematic experience that has earned a lasting cult reputation.
