Plot Summary

American Pastoral explores the slow and devastating collapse of what appears to be a flawless American family. Seymour “Swede” Levov, once a celebrated high school athlete and now a successful businessman, embodies the ideal postwar American dream. He shares a seemingly perfect life with his former beauty-queen wife and their teenage daughter, enjoying prosperity, social respect, and domestic harmony.

This carefully constructed world shatters when Levov’s daughter suddenly disappears. The situation turns nightmarish as he discovers that she is wanted for committing a brutal act of political terrorism. Refusing to accept the official narrative, Levov embarks on a desperate search to uncover the truth and find his child, no matter the cost.
