Rishi Sunak was born on May 12, 1980, in Southampton, Hampshire, England, as the eldest of three children of Yashvir Sunak and Usha Sunak. He comes from an Indian-origin family that migrated from East Africa to the United Kingdom in the 1960s. His father was a general practitioner, and his mother was a pharmacist who ran a local pharmacy. His father was born and raised in the Kenya Colony (present-day Kenya), while his mother was born in Tanganyika, which later became part of Tanzania. His grandparents were born in the Punjab region of British India and migrated with their families to Nairobi in 1935 to work as clerks.



Rishi Sunak was educated at Winchester College, one of England’s oldest and most prestigious independent schools, where he also worked as a waiter during summer holidays. He graduated from Lincoln College, University of Oxford, in 2001, where he studied Philosophy, Politics, and Economics. He later received an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business in California in 2006 as a Fulbright Scholar.

Between 2001 and 2004, Rishi Sunak worked as an analyst at the investment bank Goldman Sachs. He later joined the hedge fund management firm Children’s Investment Fund Management, becoming a partner in September 2006 before leaving the firm later that year. From 2013 to 2015, he served as a director at Catamaran Ventures, the investment firm owned by his father-in-law, Indian billionaire N. R. Narayana Murthy.

Considered one of the wealthiest Conservative Members of Parliament, Rishi Sunak has not publicly detailed his assets, though his personal wealth was estimated at approximately £730 million as of 2022.

Rishi Sunak was elected to the House of Commons in the May 7, 2015, general election as the Conservative Party Member of Parliament for Richmond, Yorkshire. In 2016, he was among Conservatives who supported the United Kingdom’s withdrawal from the European Union during the Brexit campaign.

From January 9, 2018, to July 24, 2019, Rishi Sunak served as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Local Government in the government of Theresa May. He later served as Chief Secretary to the Treasury from July 24, 2019, to February 13, 2020, under Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

On February 13, 2020, Rishi Sunak was appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer, a position he held until July 5, 2022. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he received widespread praise for implementing a £514 billion economic rescue package that helped prevent mass unemployment. However, he also faced criticism after being fined for breaching COVID-19 restrictions alongside Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

On July 5, 2022, Rishi Sunak resigned as Chancellor, publicly criticizing Boris Johnson. Rishi Sunak married Akshata Murthy in August 2009. The couple has two daughters, Krishna Sunak and Anoushka Sunak.
