Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson, widely known as Boris Johnson, is a British Conservative politician and journalist who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 2019 to 2022. He previously held the positions of Foreign Secretary and Mayor of London and is known for his distinctive political style, populist rhetoric, and influential role in the Brexit process.

Boris Johnson was born on 19 June 1964 in Manhattan, New York City, United States. His family returned to the United Kingdom when he was five years old. During childhood, Johnson experienced hearing impairment but recovered following several medical operations. He holds British citizenship and was educated at the University of Oxford, where he studied Classics.

Johnson is the son of Stanley Johnson and the great-grandson of Ali Kemal, the last Interior Minister of the Ottoman Empire. Ali Kemal served as a minister in the government of Damat Ferid Pasha and opposed the Turkish War of Independence. In 1922, Ali Kemal was killed by lynching while being transported to Ankara for trial.

After graduating from Oxford University, Boris Johnson began his journalism career at The Times. He later moved to The Daily Telegraph, where he worked as an editor’s assistant and correspondent. In 1999, he became editor of The Spectator magazine. He gained wide public attention after winning first place in a poetry competition organized by The Spectator, in which he wrote a satirical poem insulting Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Johnson entered parliamentary politics in 2001, when he was elected as a Member of Parliament for the Conservative Party. He later served as Mayor of London from 4 May 2008 to 9 May 2016, after representing Henley-on-Thames as an MP.

On 13 July 2016, following the resignation of David Cameron and the formation of a new government under Theresa May, Boris Johnson was appointed as the United Kingdom’s Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs. In September 2016, he visited Turkey in his official capacity, meeting President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. During this visit, he also toured damaged sections of the Turkish Grand National Assembly affected during the 15 July 2016 coup attempt and paid tribute at Anıtkabir, the mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal ATATÜRK.

While signing the Anıtkabir Special Register, Johnson wrote the following statement:

“It is a great privilege to return to the land of my ancestors, to pay my respects to the founder of modern, free, and democratic Turkey, and to see how his vision has been fulfilled by Turkey’s place among the great nations of the world.”

Boris Johnson resigned from his role as Foreign Secretary on 9 July 2018. Following the repeated rejection of Theresa May’s Brexit agreement in Parliament, May stepped down as leader of the Conservative Party on 7 June 2019. Johnson won the party leadership contest and, on 23 July 2019, succeeded Theresa May as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Johnson tested positive for coronavirus and entered self-isolation. As his condition worsened, he was admitted to intensive care on 5 April 2020. He was transferred to standard care on 9 April and discharged from St Thomas’ Hospital on 12 April 2020 after testing negative.

Under mounting political pressure, Boris Johnson announced his resignation as Prime Minister on 7 July 2022, remaining in office until a successor was appointed. On 6 September 2022, he formally handed over the office of Prime Minister to Liz Truss. On 9 June 2023, Johnson resigned from Parliament, ending his tenure as a Member of Parliament.
