Naomi Campbell was born on May 22, 1970, in Streatham, London. She grew up in a working-class neighborhood of London. Her mother, Valerie Campbell, is a Jamaican-born former ballerina. Her father, whose mother was Chinese, was of Jamaican-Chinese descent. Naomi’s father left before she was born, while her mother was four months pregnant, and she later took the surname “Campbell” from her mother’s second marriage.



During the years when her mother worked in Italy, Naomi Campbell was accepted at the age of ten into the Italia Conti Academy in Rome, where she began formal ballet training. She later continued her education in England at Dunraven School and under the Inner London Education Authority. On February 7, 1978, she appeared as a child performer in a music video by Bob Marley.

At the age of fifteen, while still a student at the Italia Conti Academy, Naomi Campbell was discovered by Beth Boldt while shopping in London’s Covent Garden.
