Chris Pine was born on August 26, 1980, in Los Angeles, California, United States. His father, Robert Pine, and his mother, Gwynne Gilford, are both film actors. He has an older sister, Katherine Pine (born 1972), who is also an actress. Pine studied at the University of California and spent his final year at the University of Leeds in England. Before beginning his acting career, he received professional acting training at the San Francisco American Conservatory Theater.



Chris Pine began his professional acting career in 2003 with roles in the television series ER and The Guardian. In 2004, he appeared alongside Anne Hathaway in the film The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement. In 2006, he starred opposite Lindsay Dee Lohan in the romantic comedy Just My Luck, marking one of his early leading roles.

In 2009, Chris Pine gained international recognition by portraying the younger version of Captain James T. Kirk in the science fiction film Star Trek. The character of Captain Kirk had previously been portrayed by William Shatner in the original television series broadcast between 1966 and 1969. Pine’s performance introduced the iconic character to a new generation of audiences.

The 2009 film Star Trek, directed by Jeffrey Jacob Abrams, focuses on the first meeting of Captain Kirk, Mister Spock, Doctor McCoy, and engineer Scott at Starfleet Academy, as well as their first mission aboard the starship Enterprise. The film featured an ensemble cast including John Cho, Ben Cross, Bruce Greenwood, Simon Pegg, Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Winona Ryder, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin, Eric Bana, and Leonard Nimoy.

In 2013, Chris Pine reprised his role as James T. Kirk in the sequel Star Trek Into Darkness, which continued the storyline of the 2009 film. The cast once again included Zachary Quinto, John Cho, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin, Leonard Nimoy, and Bruce Greenwood. New additions to the cast included Benedict Cumberbatch, Peter Weller, and Alice Eve.
