Trainspotting (1996)
Official Trailer
Plot Summary
Set in Edinburgh, Trainspotting is a raw and unflinching portrait of a group of heroin addicts drifting through the margins of society. Adapted from the novel by Irvine Welsh, the film captures the chaotic rhythm of addiction with dark humor, brutal honesty, and relentless energy.
At the center of the story is Renton (Ewan McGregor), a sharp-tongued and deeply cynical young man in his twenties who is both repulsed by and trapped within his own self-destructive lifestyle. Alongside his friends Tommy (Kevin McKidd), Spud (Ewen Bremner), Sick Boy (Jonny Lee Miller), and the violently unhinged Begbie (Robert Carlyle), Renton oscillates between attempts at escape and inevitable relapse.
As their lives spiral through loss, betrayal, and moral decay, the film confronts themes of dependency, alienation, and the illusion of choice in a society offering little hope. Through its iconic visual style and unforgettable soundtrack, Trainspotting stands as a defining work of 1990s British cinema, refusing to romanticize addiction while exposing its seductive pull.
