Story Overview

The Counterfeiters is a gripping historical drama based on the true story of master forger Salomon Sorowitsch, brought to life through the powerful performance of Karl Markovics. The film, directed and written by Stefan Ruzowitzky, explores one of the most morally complex and lesser-known operations of World War II.

Winner of the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film at the 80th Academy Awards, the film reveals how the Nazi Germany regime orchestrated a massive counterfeiting scheme to destabilize enemy economies. Sorowitsch, a highly skilled Jewish forger, is captured and forced to participate in this secret operation under the constant threat of death.

Set initially in Berlin in 1936, Sorowitsch thrives in a world of deception, luxury, and crime. His life takes a drastic turn when he is arrested by Inspector Herzog (Devid Striesow) and sent to the brutal concentration camps. Eventually transferred to Sachsenhausen concentration camp, he is placed in a specialized unit tasked with producing counterfeit currency for the Nazi war effort.

Inside the camp, the counterfeiters are given relatively privileged conditions compared to other prisoners—clean beds, sufficient food, and even music. Yet, beneath this illusion of comfort lies a terrifying reality: failure means execution. Sorowitsch must navigate a psychological battlefield between survival and morality.

As tensions rise, his fellow prisoner Burger challenges the ethics of their work, urging sabotage despite the deadly consequences. Meanwhile, the tragic fate of Kolya (Sebastian Urzendowsky) forces Sorowitsch to confront his conscience. The film masterfully portrays the internal conflict between self-preservation and resistance, making The Counterfeiters a deeply human story set against the horrors of war.
