Story Overview

Hairspray is a lively musical comedy set in the early 1960s in Baltimore, following the dreams of a big-hearted teenager with an even bigger personality. Tracy Turnblad (Nikki Blonsky) loves dancing more than anything else and dreams of appearing on the city’s most popular television dance program, “The Corny Collins Show.” However, there is one problem standing in her way: Tracy does not fit the narrow beauty standards of the show. Her weight has often made her feel excluded, and even her well-meaning but overprotective mother Edna (John Travolta) frequently reminds her of the obstacles she faces.

Despite the discouragement, Tracy refuses to give up on her passion. When host Corny Collins (James Marsden) unexpectedly notices her dancing talent, she earns a chance to appear on the program. Tracy’s vibrant personality and energetic moves quickly capture the hearts of viewers across the city, transforming her into an overnight sensation.

Her sudden popularity, however, creates tension with the show’s reigning star Amber Von Tussle (Brittany Snow) and Amber’s ambitious mother Velma (Michelle Pfeiffer), who controls much of the program’s direction at WYZT television. Matters become even more complicated when Amber’s boyfriend, Link Larkin (Zac Efron), begins to show interest in Tracy.

As the upcoming “Miss Hairspray” competition approaches, the rivalry among the girls intensifies. In the midst of music, dance, and colorful spectacle, Tracy must prove that confidence, kindness, and individuality matter far more than appearances.
