Charlie Wilson's War (2007)

Official Trailer

Plot Summary

Set against the backdrop of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, Charlie Wilson's War tells the extraordinary true story of Texas congressman Charlie Wilson, a charismatic and deeply unconventional politician who becomes an unlikely key figure in one of the largest covert operations in American history.

Known publicly for his indulgent lifestyle, Wilson conceals behind his flamboyant persona a sharp political instinct and a sincere sense of patriotism. His growing concern for the suffering of the Afghan people gradually pushes him beyond the symbolic gestures of Washington politics and into direct action.

Wilson’s transformation accelerates through his close relationship with Joanne Herring (Julia Roberts), a wealthy and fiercely anti-communist socialite from Texas. Convinced that the United States’ response to the Soviet occupation is dangerously insufficient, Joanne urges Wilson to use his political influence to support the Afghan resistance fighters.

To turn idealism into action, Wilson allies himself with Gust Avrakotos (Philip Seymour Hoffman), a hard-drinking, sharp-witted CIA operative with a talent for navigating the murky world of covert intelligence. Together, they engineer a secret alliance involving Pakistanis, Israelis, Egyptians, U.S. lawmakers, and a collection of unlikely intermediaries.

As the operation expands, American funding for clandestine missions in Afghanistan grows from a few million dollars annually to nearly one billion, dramatically shifting the balance of power on the battlefield. The film traces how a combination of political maneuvering, personal conviction, and moral ambiguity contributes to the eventual withdrawal of the Soviet army—while quietly raising questions about the long-term consequences of victory achieved in the shadows.
