Plot Summary

After the death of her husband Joe, Arvilla Holden (Jessica Lange) finds herself navigating a period of deep emotional loss. Honoring Joe’s final wish—to be cremated and have his ashes scattered to the sky—Arvilla sets out on a journey that quickly becomes more than a simple act of farewell.

Joined by her close friends Margene and Carol (Kathy Bates and Joan Allen), Arvilla embarks on a road trip in a classic convertible Bonneville. While her companions believe they are heading toward Santa Barbara, Arvilla secretly plans a more personal route across the American West, determined to fulfill her husband’s last request in her own way.

What begins as a solemn mission evolves into a transformative journey. Along the open roads, the three women confront their pasts, rediscover the strength of their friendship, and come to understand the deeper meaning of loyalty, grief, and letting go. The trip ultimately becomes a liberating experience—one that reshapes their perspectives on life and the promises they keep.
