Official Trailer

Plot Summary

Black Mass is a chilling crime drama based on true events, exploring the uneasy alliance between organized crime and federal law enforcement in 1970s Boston. The film centers on James “Whitey” Bulger, a ruthless Irish-American gangster whose rise to power was enabled by a covert and deeply corrupt partnership with the FBI.

Portrayed with unsettling restraint by Johnny Depp, Bulger becomes an FBI informant after reconnecting with childhood acquaintance John Connolly, played by Joel Edgerton. Connolly, eager to advance his career, protects Bulger’s criminal empire in exchange for information on rival mob figures, blurring the line between justice and complicity.

As Bulger’s influence expands, his reign of violence intensifies, leaving a trail of murder, intimidation, and fear throughout Boston. Meanwhile, the federal protection meant to control crime instead allows it to flourish, exposing systemic corruption at the highest levels of law enforcement.

Relentless in tone and stark in presentation, Black Mass is a study of power, loyalty, and moral collapse. The film examines how personal ambition and institutional failure can transform criminals into untouchable figures, offering a grim portrait of a city held hostage by betrayal from both sides of the law.
