Reed Hastings, whose full name is Wilmot Reed Hastings Jr., was born on October 8, 1960, in Boston, Massachusetts. His father, Wilmot Reed Hastings, was a lawyer who served in the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare during the administration of Richard Nixon. His mother is Joan Amory Loomis. Hastings graduated from Buckingham Browne & Nichols School in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and completed his undergraduate education at Bowdoin College in the field of mathematics, preparing for a career in teaching. He later pursued graduate studies at Stanford University.

In 1981, Reed Hastings completed his military service at the Quantico Marine Corps Base. Between 1983 and 1985, he served as a Peace Corps volunteer, teaching mathematics to approximately 800 students at a rural high school in Swaziland, located in northwestern Africa. This experience played a significant role in shaping his worldview and leadership philosophy.

After returning from Africa, Hastings initially applied to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology but was rejected. He instead continued his education at Stanford University and graduated in 1988 with a Master’s degree in Computer Science.

Reed Hastings began his professional career at Adaptive Technology, where he developed a tool designed to debug software errors. In 1990, while serving as CEO at Adaptive Corp., he met Audrey MacLean. In 1991, he left Adaptive Technology to co-found his first company, Pure Software, alongside Mark Box and Raymond Peck.

Due to limited management experience, Hastings faced challenges during the rapid growth of Pure Software. He openly acknowledged struggling with leadership responsibilities as the company expanded. Despite concerns from the board, he remained in his role and learned the fundamentals of executive management. In 1995, Pure Software went public through an initial public offering led by Morgan Stanley.

In 1996, Pure Software merged with Atria Software, forming Pure Atria. One year later, the company was acquired by Rational Software. Following the acquisition, Reed Hastings was appointed Chief Technology Officer but left the company shortly thereafter.

Reed Hastings is married to Patricia Ann Quillin, and the couple has two children.

In 1997, Hastings co-founded Netflix with his friend and software engineer Marc Randolph. The company initially offered a flat-fee DVD rental service delivered by mail to customers across the United States. Anticipating the future of digital media, Netflix launched its online streaming service in 2007, allowing users to watch films and television series over the internet.
